  • 🌾 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 🧈 1/4 cup butter
  • 🌾 4 cups seafood stock
  • 🌿 2 bay leaves
  • 🍚 Cooked white rice, for serving

How to Make New Orleans Seafood Gumbo

Step 1: Make the Roux

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until it turns a deep brown color (about 10 minutes).

Step 2: Build the Base

  1. Add the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the roux.
  2. Cook for 5 minutes until softened.

Step 3: Add Seasonings and Stock

  1. Stir in the Cajun seasoning, paprika, and bay leaves.
  2. Add the diced tomatoes and seafood stock. Bring to a simmer.

Step 4: Cook the Seafood

  1. Add the fish chunks and crabmeat to the pot. Cook for 10 minutes.
  2. Gently stir in the shrimp and oysters, cooking for another 5-7 minutes until they are done.

Step 5: Serve the Gumbo

Serve the gumbo over a bowl of cooked white rice.

Remove bay leaves.
